Namibian soils

The main development project was at Swakopmund, growing asparagus by irrigating desert sand and improving the “soil” by added kraal manure.  It certainly worked, and this picture shows the ferns allowed to grow to photosynthesise in the background, and being harvested in the foreground.

the water here is rather salty and great care has to be taken with irrigation systems.  This picture shows the salt accumulations.

the site was along the Swakop “river” – a ribbon of sand in the valley floor with a slow groundwater flow towards the coast

the Swakop river from the ground – flash floods do occasionally fill the channel

the sand deposits in the channel show crude graded bedding
